n the early 1970's, teachers Cathy Caughman and Linda McGann were then mothers of
preschoolers. They watched with amazement as their children began sounding out words.
The boys were listening to beginning and ending sounds, and were hearing the subtle sound differences in short vowels. Something wonderful was going on.
hese little
children were being empowered by a strong visionary teacher using a very effective
tool… a tool that was developed way back in 1958 by a woman named Edith E Stephens… a tool that was nearly lost forever….
Talking Letters.
n 1983, Cathy and Linda opened
Mountainwood Learning Center, in Signal Mountain,
Tennessee. From years of experience, both knew how important it was to use a
successful reading program. The experience they had with their own children lead them
to resurrect the Talking Letters system. They knew it to be an easy and fun program that
not only taught the essentials but captured the hearts and imaginations of the children as well. It was a complete success.
ountainwood Learning Center quickly became known for the success its students had in
learning phonics at an early age. At the school, the three year old children are delighted to
start hearing the wonderful stories of the Talking Letters. By the time they are into the
four year old program, they are taking home reading books.
n fact the school has become so
popular, parents call while mom is still pregnant with the hope that their child can get on
the list to begin attending this outstanding school beginning at age
three.
uffice it to say that the
Mountainwood Talking Letters program, when utilized properly, will give children the tools necessary to read.
